Things To Do in Maui

I've been coming to Ka'anapali for years and sending guests to Maui long enough to know exactly what's worth your time β€” and what isn't. Here's my honest list.

Whale Watching

December – April

Ka'anapali is one of the best spots in the world for humpback whale watching. The whales migrate to Maui every winter and they are everywhere. Book a morning tour from Lahaina Harbor β€” you'll see breaches and tail slaps up close.

Host tip: Go early morning when the water is calmest. The 7 AM tours consistently have the best sightings.

🐠

Snorkeling at Black Rock

Year-round

Black Rock Beach is literally walking distance from the condos. Free, incredible snorkeling with sea turtles, tropical fish, and reef you can explore for hours. It's the best no-drive snorkel spot on the island.

Host tip: Go before 9 AM before the tour boats arrive. Gear rentals are available at Whalers Village.

Road to Hana

Year-round

The most iconic drive in Hawaii β€” 64 miles of rainforest, waterfalls, bamboo groves, and ocean views. Budget a full day and stop often. Twin Falls, Wailua Falls, and the black sand beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park are unmissable.

Host tip: Leave by 7 AM to beat traffic. Gas up before you go β€” stations are scarce on the route. A guided tour removes all the stress and they handle parking reservations.

πŸŒ…

Haleakalā Sunrise

Year-round

Watching the sunrise from the 10,000-foot summit of Haleakalā is something you'll talk about for years. It's cold at the top β€” bring a jacket no matter how warm it is in Ka'anapali. Reservations are required.

Host tip: You need a reservation through the National Park Service. A guided tour handles everything β€” transportation, breakfast, and bike rides down the volcano.

πŸ„

Surf Lessons

Year-round

Ka'anapali Beach has gentle waves perfect for first-timers. Surf lessons from certified instructors are one of the most fun things you can do on the island β€” even if you've never stood on a board in your life.

Host tip: Book an early morning lesson (8 or 9 AM) when the water is glassy. Most people are standing by the end of their first lesson.

🚣

Molokini Snorkel Cruise

Year-round

Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater about 3 miles off Maui's south coast with 150-foot visibility. It's one of the top snorkeling spots in the world. Worth every minute of the boat ride.

Host tip: Go on a smaller boat (6–10 people) for a better experience than the big party catamarans. Book the morning departure for calmer water.

🌺

Old Lahaina Luau

Year-round

The most authentic luau on Maui β€” a real cultural experience, not a tourist show. Amazing food, fire dancing, storytelling, and sunset views. Books out weeks in advance.

Host tip: Book as early as possible β€” this one sells out constantly. Maui Nui Luau at the Sheraton is a good backup if Old Lahaina is sold out.

🐒

Sea Turtle Snorkel Tours

Year-round

Dedicated turtle snorkel tours take you to spots with near-guaranteed sea turtle sightings. Green sea turtles are everywhere in Maui waters and they're completely unbothered by snorkelers.

Host tip: You can see turtles from shore at Black Rock for free β€” but the boat tours get you to deeper spots with bigger groups of turtles.

πŸ”οΈ

Iao Valley State Park

Year-round

A stunning lush valley just 20 minutes from Ka'anapali. The Iao Needle is the iconic volcanic rock formation you've seen in every Maui travel guide. Easy walk, short hike, dramatic scenery.

Host tip: Free to enter. Combine with a drive to Wailuku for lunch β€” it's the most non-touristy town on West Maui.

πŸ›Έ

Helicopter Tours

Year-round

The best way to see all of Maui in one go β€” the waterfalls, Haleakalā crater, the back side of the West Maui Mountains. Doors-off tours are unreal if you're comfortable with heights.

Host tip: Blue Hawaiian and Maverick are the most reputable operators. Book the first morning flight for the clearest skies.
